PRECISION SHOOTING - A NEW NSRG DISCIPLINE!
Welcome to a new NSRG program
.
The new North Saanich Precision Shooting Program (NSPSP) started on January 1, 2024. The NSPSP operates every Sunday morning from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm in Bay 2.
This program is the successor to the Victoria Precision Shooting Association. Formed in 1993, the VPSA had used the NSRG range from 1998 to the end of 2023 when the amalgamation with NSRG was approved by both clubs.
Shooters of all abilities are welcome, from novices to the very experienced and proficient. Long time shooters are available to provide shooting tips and advice on how to improve shooting skills.
The NSPSP promotes the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) style of hand gun and rifle shooting, which is the style used at the Olympic Games and world championships. The NSRG is the only organization south of the Malahat to have this type of program. More information on ISSF shooting can be found on the ISSF web site.
There is one intra-club competition usually the first Sunday of each month, and three practice sessions per month. The competitions cycle through various shooting formats each month.
Bay 2 has room for 14 shooters at one time. During practices, shooters come and go during that time so lack of space is rarely an issue. However, because of space limitations, a maximum of 14 shooters can participate in the competitions at one time.
Participants in the NSPSP shoot .22” calibre (5.56 mm) pistol and rifle, as well as centre fire (usually .32”, .38”, and 9mm) pistol. While following the spirit and rules of ISSF shooting as closely as possible, some of the shooting protocols have been modified somewhat to fit the conditions at NSRG.
The formats shot by NSPSP are:
- 25 metre standard pistol (.22”)
- 25 metre centre fire pistol (.32”, .38”, and 9mm)
- 25 metre pistol (only for women by ISSF but shot by both men and women at NSPSP (.22”)
- 50 metre pistol (previously known as free pistol) (.22”)
- Supported rest shooting for pistols and rifles (to encourage seniors needing more support to continue with precision shooting). Supported rest shooting can be used for any of the events, but especially for 50 m pistol.
- 50 metre rifle (standing only) (.22”)
With the exception of supported rest shooting all pistol shooting is done with one hand from an unsupported standing position and all rifle shooting is done from an unsupported standing position. Unless otherwise specified, all competitions are for firearms using iron sights.
To provide some variety, the NSPSP includes one competition each year at 50 metres for rifles with scopes.
The ISSF pistol rules may be found at ISSF Pistol Rules. For the ISSF rifle rules go to ISSF Rifle Rules. Go to the ISSF General Technical Rules for more general information. Supported Rest Shooting information may be found at Supported Rest Shooting.
These rules are very formal and structured so, to promote fun in shooting, the NSPSP has adopted a more casual friendly approach while still adhering to the basic competition rules and format for each match.
It is hoped that this new program will interest more NSRG members in trying ISSF style shooting.
If interested, come out and have a look some Sunday, especially during a competition. The competition schedule is posted on the Precision Shooting bulletin board at the range.
