About Juniors at NSRG

The North Saanich Rod & Gun Club offers an introductory shooting program designed for youth, beginners, and anyone interested in learning the fundamentals of safe and responsible target shooting.

The program is provided at no cost to participants. Rifles, ammunition, eye protection, and hearing protection are all supplied by the club. Sessions operate in a relaxed, supportive environment where participants receive coaching appropriate to their experience and skill level.

New participants are required to attend an Introductory Session before joining regular practice sessions. These introductory sessions provide an overview of range safety, club procedures, range etiquette, and coaching methods, ensuring that all participants begin with a common understanding of expectations. Even individuals with previous shooting experience are required to attend an Introductory Session to become familiar with the NSRG range, safety protocols, and instructional approach.

There is no specific age requirement for participation. Instead, eligibility is based on the participant's ability to safely handle a standard-sized rifle and maintain the focus and maturity needed for a two-hour instructional session.

While the program is primarily aimed at young shooters, parents are welcome to participate alongside their children. Adults with little or no shooting experience who wish to develop practical shooting skills in a safe and supervised setting are also encouraged to attend.

Regular sessions are held on Saturdays from September through May. Introductory Sessions are typically offered on the first Saturday of each month, although dates may vary throughout the season.

The program's goal is to introduce participants to the shooting sports in a safe, enjoyable, and educational environment while building confidence, discipline, responsibility, and marksmanship skills.

Juniors Fees

Program Fees and Insurance

The NSRG Junior Program is offered free of charge to participants. The program is supported by the North Saanich Rod & Gun Club and supplemented through the generous contributions of individual donors and community supporters, helping to maintain and replace equipment as needed.

To participate, youth shooters must have liability and accident insurance coverage equivalent to that provided through organizations such as the BC Wildlife Federation (BCWF) or similar recognized programs. Proof of current coverage must be presented to program coaches at registration.

If you have questions regarding acceptable insurance coverage or participation requirements, please contact the Junior Program Chairman before attending your first session.

What to Expect

Introductory Sessions

The Introductory Session is the most structured session in the program and serves as the required starting point for all new participants. Because it is designed specifically for beginners, regular program attendees will generally not participate, allowing new shooters to learn at a comfortable pace.

The session includes:

  • An introduction to firearm and range safety principles
  • Familiarization with the single-shot .22 LR rifles used in the program
  • Hands-on instruction in safe rifle handling and operation
  • Supervised live-fire shooting on the range

Initial shooting activities are conducted using step-by-step instruction to build confidence and familiarity with the equipment and range procedures. As participants become more comfortable, instruction gradually transitions to the standard range commands and practices used during regular program sessions.

Even shooters with previous experience are required to attend an Introductory Session to become familiar with NSRG's range procedures, safety standards, and instructional approach.

For many new participants, attending with a friend or sibling can make the first session more enjoyable and less intimidating. If you know someone else who may be interested, consider registering together.

Regular Program Sessions

The primary focus of the Junior Program is precision shooting with single-shot .22 LR rifles. This discipline emphasizes safety, concentration, consistency, and marksmanship fundamentals.

Participants work on developing shooting technique and measuring their progress through the Canadian Shooting Sports Association's recreational smallbore marksmanship programs, which provide a series of achievable skill levels and performance goals.

To keep the program interesting and expose participants to the broader shooting sports community, approximately every eight weeks a special "Introduction to..." session may be offered. These sessions can include disciplines such as:

  • Silhouette shooting
  • Handgun shooting
  • Shotgun shooting
  • Other shooting sports and activities

The goal is to provide participants with opportunities to experience different shooting disciplines while maintaining a strong foundation in safe firearm handling and marksmanship.

What Should I Wear?

Program sessions are conducted from a covered firing line with a concrete shooting pad. The covered structure protects participants from rain and other precipitation; however, it is open on the sides, meaning that temperature, wind, and humidity can significantly affect comfort.

Participants are encouraged to wear:

  • Comfortable outdoor clothing
  • Long pants
  • Long-sleeved shirts
  • Closed-toe footwear
  • Multiple lightweight layers that can be added or removed as conditions change

Because much of the shooting is done from the prone (lying down) position, durable clothing suitable for outdoor activity is recommended.
